My parents lived in Germany for about 3 years before they started a family (my dad was stationed in the Army there) so while growing up some of the German traditions and customs were introduced to our family. One of the traditions that we loved was celebrating the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6th and we have continued that in our family. The story of St. Nicholas is that Nicholas was born to a wealthy family and when his parents died he inherited a considerable sum of money, but he kept none of it and dedicated his life to assisting the needy, sick and suffering and that on the 6th of December every year he would fill the shoes with goodies. This year Rich was travelling for the night so he wasn't home to leave his shoes out and it just slipped my mind but Joseph remembered to leave his on the stairs where hopefully St. Nicholas would find them.
Sure enough, St. Nicholas made a visit and Joseph was pretty excited the next morning to find some fun treats in his shoes!
As a side note-St. Nicholas was sure to let me know that the toothbrush was clean and new-it had just come out of its packaging on the way to our home!
Tried to get a picture of him with his shoes but he found a pair of baby sunglasses and his football helmet close to the shoes so he was set on wearing those instead! Silly boy!
