Random February

The second half of February was busy with visits from both sets of grandparents, so most things are covered in those respective entries; however, there are a few random pictures and tidbits that I wanted to include.
Love this view!  Heading to the park to meet Olivia and Jack on February 15th.
Julia received her first ash on February 18th.  Joseph had school that day and they offered the students ashes during chapel time that morning and his teacher told me that he was adamant that he did not want ashes.  When Ella, Julia and I went to pick him up and we all had ashes on our foreheads he had plenty of questions for me.  We talked about them the entire way down to the airport to pick up my mom.  I explained to him that we receive ashes as a reminder of God's love and that even if we make poor choices that God still loves us and will forgive us.  About twenty minutes after explaining this he asked me, "Mom, what bad choices has Julia made?"  I replied, "Julia hasn't made any poor choices-she's a baby."  And then he said, "Well, why did she get ashes then?" He was definitely processing it all!  I explained to him that it was just God's way of loving her and letting her know that if she makes poor choices as she grows up that God will always love her.  He seemed to be ok with that and then he proceeded to ask me about all of the poor choices that I have made.  Ha!  I would say something like, "Well when I was a kid I would fight with my brother and sisters." And then he would say, "And, what else?"  So I'd tell him another one and then he'd say again, "And, what else?"  I felt like I was in confession with a very interrogating and demanding priest!!   I tried offering him some of my ash but he had no interest in it...maybe next year!
Ella continues to be our little monkey and was enjoying her snack like this one day.
And, this is her new trick in the bathtub!
She encourages Joseph to do the same!
When Ella did this for the first time, Joseph said to her, "Ella, you're rockin' it!"  This was the same day that he told me, "Mom, you rock."  I don't think that he picked this up from Rich or I but it makes me laugh everytime he says it.  He often says, "Rats" now if gets disappointed which really makes me laugh and think of my sisters everytime I hear him say it!  Rich started saying "rats" a few years ago and it has stuck in our family!  Ha ha.
This past month Ella has caught on to the word, "Now!" and is pretty demanding with it.  Seriously she will say, "Milk...NOW!"  After putting her in her place one day letting her know that it is not an ok way to talk to anyone like that, she now says, "Now, peese (please)!"  Still with urgency though!
She also continues to be such a hoarder.  She finds EVERY.SINGLE. BAG. in our house and starts stashing things in them.  The best thing about it is that if you ask her for something she totally remembers where it is.  She'll say "bag" and then run off and get it for you.  Most nights we just put the bags back in the playroom but every once in awhile it is just too much for me and I find myself going through the bags to put all of the toys/random objects back in their places.  Thankfully so far I've only found one cup of milk in a bag that was less than a day old so we've been ok in that department. We've been calling her "the stasher" since I feel like "hoarder" just has a more negative connotation!
When my mom was here we were at church in the cry room and Ella basically did an entire bootcamp routine for us.  Thankfully we were the only ones in the room and she was quiet doing it anyways but it was so funny.  We tried really hard to concentrate on the homily but it was definitely distracting watching her do burpees and "jacks" out of the corner of our eye!  She continues to workout right next to me when I go to bootcamp or when I am teaching-even to the point where if we are doing squats with a heel raise she will also have her heel raised.  She LOVES it!!
Another church story with Ella is we were getting ready to say the "Our Father" and she stood in front of Rich and I and held both of her hands out to the side.  This is a prayer that you normally hold hands for unless if there is nobody to the left or right of you to hold your hand, which in that case you just hold your hands in the air at your side, so she totally did the right thing. It is truly amazing the things that they pick up on at such an early age.  It made Rich and I smile!
She is such a funny little girl and definitely keeps us laughing...and also on our toes!
She loves jumping in Julia's tub after she is done with her bath!
February 24th
Hard to believe that February is over already!  We are hoping that Daddy's travel schedule slows down in March but are thankful for Nani and Nonna and Pop's visits and for our friends who kept us busy this month!  Off to March...

Nonna and Pop Pop's visit

We were extra lucky during the month of February since less than a week after Nani left, Nonna and Pop Pop came to visit for a long weekend.  They arrived on Thursday, February 26th and stayed through Sunday, February 29th.  Other than just to visit with us, the main reason for their visit was for Moon to run The Woodlands marathon, which Terri gave to Moon for his birthday (pretty awesome birthday gift for someone turning 65, right?!)
Thursday night after dinner we celebrated Pop Pop's birthday with cupcakes and candy bowls including french burnt peanuts (Pop Pop's favorite and a Ducote tradition).  Joseph was excited to help Pop Pop blow out the candles!
On Friday, Pop Pop and Daddy took Joseph to school (he was having a teddy bear picnic so didn't want to miss) and while he was at school the rest of us went to the marathon expo to pick up packets and then grabbed lunch at Market Street.  We picked up Joseph at 2:00 and then drove the race course for the following morning.  After an early dinner we headed to Towne Greene for Joseph's 2k race.  The 2K race was the culminating event for run club.  He had to run a total of 25 miles between September and February (which he did!) and then the race gave him the last 1.2 miles to equal 26.2 miles which is the distance of a marathon so he received not only a medal from the race but also a marathon medal.  The run club was a great activity which really ended up being a family activity since most weeks we would all go together on Sunday afternoons and taught Joseph the importance of setting a goal for himself without the competitiveness (although most weeks he was concerned with how many marks the other runners were getting!) It was a lot of fun and we look forward to participating next year.  Here is his log sheet for the year.

Pop Pop, Daddy and Joseph before the race.  Daddy and Pop Pop ran with Joseph which was super awesome!

After the race with his 2 medals.  It was in the low 50s so was definitely chilly once the sun went down.
We ordered an awesome picture from the photographer of Joseph crossing the finish line...still can't believe that I paid $20.00 for one 4x6 but the picture is so great that it will be worth it!  He put his arms over his head as he crossed the finish line and they caught it on camera.  Terri, the girls and I were cheering about 50 yards from the finish line and after he ran by us we started walking away to meet him after the finish line but thankfully I happened to turn to see him cross the finish and put his hands over his head-it was just the cutest thing ever.  We'll be sure to include it in his wedding slideshow some day and when he finishes his first marathon (or Ironman ;) we'll pull it out!  Once we receive it I'll add it here, too!
On Saturday morning everyone was up early!  Daddy and Pop Pop left the house around 5:30 and Terri, the kids and I were out by 7:00.  It was cold (high 30s) so we bundled everyone up to catch the racers at mile 7.  We had to wake Ella up so let the paci slide for the morning!  She eventually woke up enough to get out of the stroller and help cheer.
Daddy was happy and looked strong as he ran by!
Joseph had fun giving the racers high-fives while waiting for Pop Pop.  I was holding Ella when Pop Pop ran by so didn't get a picture of him but he looked good although he said he was in some pain (found out later that his hamstring started giving him trouble at mile 5).
After a quick stop at Starbucks to warm up, we headed to Market Street/Towne Greene area to the finish line.  Joseph kept himself entertained by rolling down the hills while waiting!
Rich finished the marathon in 3:17:59 (7:26 minutes per mile) which is super fast!! He was hoping for 3:15 so that he would qualify for the Boston marathon next year so he was so close!  After the race he signed up for the Dallas marathon in April so the quest continues for Boston and we are hoping and praying for a super fast race there!  He was in such a zone here at the finish that he didn't even hear/see us cheering for him...he's so intense ;)
Pop Pop, on the other hand, was all smiles and high fives when we saw him right before the finish line. He looked great and had a fantastic race!  He finished in 4:40:16 (10:44 minute per mile) and came in 3rd for his age group!!  What an accomplishment at the age of 65!
After we got the guys some food we let the kids burn off some energy in the bounce houses that were set up at the end of the race!  They did a great job of cheering all morning long!
We spent the rest of Saturday just relaxing and hanging out!  On Sunday we headed to church before their flight took off that afternoon but had to get a picture with the marathoners!  Love these guys!  Three generations of Richard Joseph Ducotes!
One tough pose...
And, one excited pose!
We are so thankful for this amazing weekend!  It was so special having Nonna and Pop Pop here with us and especially special to have Pop Pop run in the same race with Daddy and to run with Joseph together on Friday night. We hope that they are all up for it again next year!!

Nani's visit

My mom came to visit from Wednesday, February 18th through Sunday the 22nd.  It is always such a treat having her come to town and was even more appreciated this time since Rich was traveling for the week so I had an extra set of hands for two nights with her help.  The weather was beautiful on Thursday so we decided to head for the zoo-it was perfect zoo weather with the sun shining and about 65 degrees and really was just the perfect day.  Julia was as happy as could be sitting up like a big girl in the stroller and Ella and Joseph did an excellent job of walking everywhere and had such a fun time.
We started out by hecking out the fish
Then headed to the elephants-the baby elephant was so cute!
Quick photo op in the bird area
They have a new sea lion show (or at least new to us since we haven't been there for about a year) which was great!
Waiting patiently for the show to start
 Popping through like the muskrats!
Having fun at the playground before we head home
Such a fun day!
On Friday we headed over to our park and spent almost two hours there playing before lunch.
On Saturday morning Creekside Park had its annual Touch a Truck event so we headed over to check it out.  It was much more crowded this year than in year's past but the kids had a good time checking out the different vehicles and we ran into a bunch of friends which was fun.  We spent just as much time on the playground playing with Elsie and Ben as we did checking out the trucks but it was a great way to spend the morning outside.
Blowing the horn on the trash truck!
On Saturday afternoon after the kids rested and we made Pop's spaghetti sauce and meatballs (which turned out delicious!) we walked over to Village Green to show Nani the new area including the candy store where she treated everyone!
After the trip to the zoo with Julia out of the infant carseat, I decided to try her again sitting like a big girl and she loved it!  How cute are these two?  They are both growing up so fast!!
That night, Rich and I headed out to dinner (our first date since the arrival of Julia!!!) which was really nice and Nani didn't have any trouble at home with all three (of course she didn't though...that's why we call her Super Nani!)
On Sunday we went to church and then she entertained the kids with making caterpillars out of egg cartons before her flight left around 3:00.
Julia loved all of the Nani snuggles during her visit!
We had such a wondeful visit, as always, and are so appreciative of her help. We miss her (and Poppa) so much!  Thanks Nani-see you in April!
