We had a great Memorial Day weekend celebrating the kick off to summer and more importantly remembering those service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We feel so honored to have personal connections with so many members of the military (both past and present) and are doing our best to teach our children the importance of honoring them. I was explaining to Joseph and Ella about the importance of Memorial Day last week and Joseph said, "So we should definitely say 'thank you for your service' to the military people on this day, right?" As parents, we hope that they are always thankful and show appreciation for the military families that make sacrifices on a daily basis for our country.
Uncle Brent flew in late Friday night for a quick visit on his way back to Atlanta after a week in Hawaii with Mark. The kids were SO excited to see him and it was so sweet to watch them all go up and give him huge hugs when he woke up! They had been looking forward to his visit all week. We headed to Pacific Beach Saturday morning for breakfast burritos at Kono's.
After breakfast we headed north to Torrey Pines to take him on our favorite beach hike! Staying true to the course, Ella whined/cried/complained the entire hike up to the top but once we made it to the top and she went to the bathroom she was all smiles on the hike back down to the beach. Brent named it the "haunted hike" for her which I think will stick! Hopefully one of these times she'll kick the habit and be able to enjoy the entire thing!
Joseph held Brent's hand almost the entire hike which was super sweet. We also spotted a snake!!!! It was a yellow striped racer so wasn't poisonous but still long and a little too close for comfort!
Once on the beach the kids ended up getting totally soaked and had so much fun trying to beat the waves!
It was overcast but we stayed to play for about an hour after we finished the hike. Brent and Rich attempted to take naps but kept getting interrupted by kids wanting to play (imagine that!!)
I love Ella in the background here-she was stacking rocks on Rich's chest while he was "sleeping".
After a drive thru stop on the way home to In-n-Out to let Brent experience all the hype about the delicious burgers we hung out in the pool/spa for the rest of the day, grilled for dinner and then the brothers went to check out a movie.
Found on my phone...there were about 10 pictures of Brent and Ella like this!
Brent's flight was at 10 on Sunday morning so he was able to have breakfast with us and then headed to the airport. It was a fast visit but so great to see him and we look forward to seeing him next month in Atlanta. It really warmed my heart seeing how excited the kids (Julia included) were to see him and how they all acted as if they see each other on a daily basis.
They were having way too much fun with a snapchat app...Julia and her faces were cracking us all up!!!
On Sunday, after Rich taking Brent to the airport, we headed out to purchase patio furniture as we are getting our outdoor area ready for summer! We then got some things done around the house, I went for a walk and then we met up with friends from Joseph's school at a park close by to play and picnic. I only took this one picture the entire time but it was a fun way to spend the afternoon!
On Memorial Day, after runs, walks, and getting some things done around the yard and house, we headed up to Nani and Poppa's for a Memorial Day bbq. Nani is still in New York with baby Finn and Bri and Hollie were out of town, but the Ozecks were there, as well as Mr. George. The sun finally came out as we got there so the kids and dads played in the pool for awhile and we just had a fun afternoon together.
Our long weekend was perfect-filled with family, friends, and good times!
Happy Memorial Day weekend!
